The mission of Crossroads, Inc. is to provide housing, education, support and counseling in a homelike environment for women who have been incarcerated. Our goal is to empower women to take control of their lives and to help them step out of the revolving door of prison and jail. Since July 1974, our services have been provided at no cost to women immediately upon their release from prison. Participation in the Crossroads’ program gives a woman the security of knowing her basic needs are met and allows her to focus on acquiring new skills and tools for healthier living.
Crossroads works exclusively with women who have been incarcerated. At no cost to the resident, our six-month residential program provides a supportive, structured environment for women transitioning back into the community. Crossroads provides food and shelter immediately upon a woman's release from prison, clothing for daily wear and employment needs, and necessary toiletries. Facilitated in a sober environment licensed by the Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs, living arrangements are provided in conjunction with a variety of on-site and community-based programs. These programs allow the women to focus on the steps necessary to reshape their lives and provide them with the tools to empower themselves in carrying out these steps and, ultimately, achieve success.
The two basic goals for all women are (1) developing a healthier lifestyle through participation in drug and alcohol counseling/education, life skills sessions, and healthy living sessions; and (2) becoming an independent, contributing member of society by finding full-time employment, opening a savings account and saving a minimum of 75% of each check; and learning independent living skills for managing her own home and finances.
A program such as Crossroads is especially beneficial for the woman who has been incarcerated for an extended period of time. Her transition into the community will be more gradual and within a safe, supportive environment. Crossroads works closely with each woman, assisting her in developing the necessary tools and skills required for successful living. That being said, Crossroads will not do for the woman what she is able to do for herself. Crossroads provides the necessary support, direction, and encouragement through the various activities and services.
